Attendance Area Changes

Each year, in accordance with Board of Education policy, the school district reviews attendance area trends and determines if adjustments need to be considered. Based on current and projected enrollment numbers as well as existing building capacities, the school district is recommending an adjustment to the Gentry and Jefferson middle school attendance areas until the new middle school opens in 2022. Additionally, the district needs to establish an attendance area for the new elementary school in east Columbia set to open in 2018.

When determining changes, it is important for the community and parents of students enrolled at the impacted schools to play a role in the process. Attendance area committees have been established for both the elementary and secondary attendance area changes. Each committee, elementary and secondary, includes parent representatives from each impacted school as well as district administrators. The committees' role is to use guiding principles established by the Board of Education and enrollment data to evaluate attendance area options. The district has also engaged a company that specializes in attendance area data analysis to help with the process and provide the ability to automate the development of draft options for consideration.

Parent informational meetings will be held in order to gather input and feedback on possible attendance area changes. The committee will then determine a recommendation to be made to the Board of Education for its consideration. Approved changes to the Gentry and Jefferson middle school boundaries would go into effect for the 2017-18 school year. Changes to the elementary boundary for the new elementary school would go into effect when the new school opens in the fall of 2018.

Guiding Principles
Set by the Board of Education
  1. The boundary considers this work as part of a district plan and this work is one part of a whole.
  2. The boundary reflects the composition of the Columbia Public Schools community.
  3. The committee recognizes the power of an elementary school to create community. Accessibility for families is essential (volunteering and attending school functions are easier when the school is near).
  4. The boundary can anticipate future growth of the neighborhood.
  5. Consider time students spend on a bus and distance traveled to and from school.
  6. Consider boundary lines that follow natural/manmade boundaries.
  7. Consider a transfer policy that allows fifth graders to remain at their previous school and policies that allow siblings to remain. (Fifth grade transportation will not be provided by CPS.)
