In the interest of safety and due to overnight precipitation, morning temperatures predicted to cause flash freezing, and slick roads, CPS will have a 2-hour delayed start on Wednesday, January 23.

  • Spinal Screenings

Posted by Christine Spurling on 1/18/2019

Gentry Middle School Health Services will be conducting Spinal Screenings on February 8th, 11th and 12th during PE and Health classes. These screenings, which are a quick and simple examination of the back to detect abnormalities of the spine, will be offered to 6th grade girls, 7th and 8th grade boys and 7th grade girls who are new to Columbia Public Schools or who previously had an abnormal spinal screening.

Although this screening is not mandatory, it is an important part of our health program and we strongly urge l00% participation. If you not to wish for your student to be screened, advance written notification by a parent/guardian must be provided to the school nurse.

  • NEW! 7th Grade Book Club

Posted by Christine Spurling on 1/17/2019

Students in seventh grade who love to read and discuss what they’re reading, are invited to join like-minded book worms for the organizational meeting of the new Seventh Grade Book Club. At this first meeting we will talk about books we are reading and about books we want to read as a whole group, and share book recommendations with each other.

The organizational meeting will be held from 2:40-3:50 on Tuesday, January 22, in Room 117. Further meeting dates will be determined during the first meeting.

The activities bus will be available to students who need transportation. Students will need to register themselves for the activities bus for each after-school meeting date.

If your seventh grader is excited about reading, then we are excited to offer this opportunity to gather for book discussions.

  • AVID Recruitment for 2019-20

Posted by Kayla Phillips on 1/12/2019

The AVID Elective is a 6th through 12th grade component of the AVID Secondary System that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university.  Students take an AVID Elective course throughout middle school and high school.  This elective provides them with the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the goal of attending college.  For more than 30 years, AVID has been instrumental in preparing students for success in higher education.

The core component of the AVID Secondary System is the AVID Elective, which supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous classes.  Students are taught study skills, note-taking, time management, writing skills, and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture.  The class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by college students and provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum.  Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarship opportunities, and college admission requirement information.

    • NOTE:  Current 6th and 7th grade students are hearing about AVID Recruitment both this week and next.
    • Students may pick up an application from Mrs. Phillips, AVID Coordinator (Room 214) or in the Guidance Office.  Applications MUST be returned by Friday, January 25th.
    • This program is limited in numbers.  The AVID Team will use applications and data analysis to decide who will be interviewed & chosen for AVID Elective classes.
