English 12: British Literature

  • In this senior-level Language Arts elective, students will continue building their literacy skills through a survey of British Literature. Over the course of the year, students will read and write about artists ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer to MF Doom (a British rap artist). Designed as a survey of literature, we begin with Old English, move through to the Renaissance, and then explore the many subsequent literary movements, including Romanticism, Modernism, and even Post-Modernism. This course is designed to introduce high-level literary analysis, to explore complex readings, and to improve media literacy. Some artists, texts, or activities we might explore:

    • Artists of the Middle Ages (Chaucer, Gawain Poet)
    • William Shakespeare's plays and sonnets
    • Jonathan Swift (Gulliver's Travels and essays)
    • The Romantics (Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Shelley, etc.)
    • Victorian, Modern/Post-Modern novels (Picture of Dorian Gray, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, Brave New World, etc.)
    • Media Literacy Activities (Podcasting, film analysis and creating film adaptations)
    • Exploring "the essay" - An in-depth study of Montaigne and other essayists
    • College Readiness (Scholarship writing, resume' building, etc.)
