Ethel Waters (1896 - 1977)
Waters was one of the most influential of popular singers. She began her career as a blues singer in the 1920s and expanded from a recording music to performance on Broadway and in the movies. She made history for her work in television with her own show in 1939, The Ethel Waters Show. She was nominated for an Oscar in 1950 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and was nominated for an Emmy in 1962 for Outstanding Single Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
