AVID System

  • AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an acclaimed system designed to assist students in meeting the challenges inherent in education and in attaining the dream of college and ultimately, a successful career.  AVID is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance for students.

    The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Students will:

    • Succeed in rigorous curriculum
    • Enter mainstream activities of the school
    • Increase enrollment in four-year colleges
    • Become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society

    The objectives of the AVID system in the Columbia Public School District are to:

    • Raise the expectations of traditionally underserved students
    • Enroll middle and high school students in rigorous courses
    • Optimize students' chances for success in rigorous coursework by providing necessary instruction and a system of support
    • Empower students with critical college preparatory skills
    • Ensure that all students graduate high school college and career ready

    AVID targets students in the academic middle-who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students capable of completing rigorous curriculum, but may need additional support.

    AVID is offered as an elective course, through an application and  selection process, to students meeting the following criteria:

    • Be described as one of the following:
      • first in family to attend college
      • capable of completing rigorous curriculum with support
      • may be underrepresented in colleges and universities
      • have a family situation that might affect opportunities to attend a college or university
    • Maintain a GPA between 2.0 and 3.5
    • Good classroom behavior
    • Good attendance
    • Capable of completing a course of study that fulfills college admission requirements
    • Motivated, with a desire to prepare for entrance in a four-year college or university

    AVID instructional strategies are centered around the WICOR method. WICOR stands for:

    • Writing
    • Inquiry
    • Collaboration
    • Organization
    • Reading

    AVID student activities include:

    • Learning with tutors
    • Working on organizational skills
    • Reading critically
    • Asking probing questions
    • Participating in enrichment and motivational activities
    • Note-taking for all curriculum
    • Writing for all classes
    • Developing interpersonal relationships and self-reliance
    • Preparing for a professional career
    • Interacting with guest speakers
