The Columbia Schools District continues the long-term task of monitoring all asbestos in district buildings. Since the implementation of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) in 1978, the district has spent more than $2 million removing asbestos-containing materials. Surveillance occurs every six months or less, and a complete inspection occurs every three years. A copy of the AHERA Management Plan and inspection reports is available for review at the Facilities & Construction Services at 5909 Paris Road, Columbia, Missouri 65202, as well as at each school office.
Asbestos Notification
This notification applies to all Columbia Public School (CPS) buildings.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) under the Federal Code of Regulations 40 CFR 763.93g(4) requires that building occupants be notified annually of the presence of asbestos in the building and the availability of the Asbestos Management Plan.
Columbia Public Schools remains committed to remaining a safe and healthy environment for all children, employees and guests in our schools.
In accordance with AHERA, Columbia Public Schools inspects each school building for asbestos containing materials. Management plans have been developed outlining how asbestos containing materials will be handled in each school building.
The management plan identifies the types and locations of asbestos in the building, and identifies inspections, sampling data, and response actions taken by the district.
The district monitors, inspects and repairs or removes, if needed, any known locations of asbestos containing materials.
