All 5th graders in Columbia Public Schools can sign up for Band or Orchestra in 6th grade! During middle school, students in band or orchestra meet every day to practice their instruments and prepare for performances.
Students begin by choosing from a small group of instruments.
Not sure what to play?
- Think about the instruments you saw at the Extravaganza. Which one looked or sounded the most fun?
- Some instruments start later in middle school. Check the chart above to see which ones begin in 6th grade and which can be added later.
In Columbia Public Schools, the beginning band program follows an approach where students start with a limited set of instruments and are grouped into classes based on their instrument choices. This approach is designed to help students develop strong fundamentals, good habits, and enjoy their musical experience. However, to have great bands, we eventually need all of the instruments available. Suppose a student has their heart set on playing specific instruments such as the saxophone, French horn, baritone, or tuba. In that case, they should carefully consider which instrument to begin playing, as this initial choice will likely influence their musical journey in the program.

If your student dreams of playing the saxophone, French horn, baritone, or tuba, they should think carefully about which instrument to start with—this choice will help shape their musical path.
