K-5 Abuse Prevention Program Form
The Columbia Public Schools Abuse Prevention Program was established in the 1980’s by a group of counselors, teachers, and parents. Today this safety prevention program is delivered district-wide in grades K-5 as a part of the curriculum component of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program. The Second Step Child Protection Unit is used to teach important skills to promote personal safety.
Each year during the CPS Abuse Prevention Parent Preview Night, parents are given the opportunity to preview the abuse prevention materials used in the classrooms. At this annual event, elementary counselors provide a review of the classroom presentations and allow time for parents to ask questions and provide feedback. This event takes place in advance of the classroom lessons, so there is ample opportunity for parents to initiate this important discussion at home.
