Special Services - Special Education & 504

Welcome to Special Services! Our department provides staff, resources, and supports throughout the district specific to the needs of students in each building. The broad range of special education services and supports, including those related to Section 504, allows most of our children with disabilities to be served in the student's home school. In the past, special educators were an isolated system of support. Today, regular educators and special educators work together with parents to teach children with and without disabilities in a variety of settings in each school.
Special Services is the largest department in Columbia Public Schools. With more than 500 team members, it can sometimes be hard to know who to contact or where to get answers to common questions. This page is here to help! Below, you’ll find an overview of important information, key roles, and who to reach out to if you have questions about your child’s support and services.
Read the 2025–2026 Special Services Back to School Family Newsletter to stay informed about important updates, resources, and supports available for students and families as we begin the new school year.
