Walking to school can be fun and healthy. It is important to follow safety tips to help make sure students get to and from school safely.
Walk Together
Younger children should always walk with an adult. Walking together is a good way to get exercise and spend time as a family.
If students are allowed to walk to school on their own, they should follow these tips:
- Walk with a friend when possible.
- Ask parents to help choose a safe route to school that avoids hazards.
- Stay on the route chosen with parents and avoid dangerous shortcuts.
- Do not push, shove, or chase others near the street.
- Never hitchhike or accept rides from someone not approved by parents.
- Tell parents or a teacher about any bullying that happens during the walk to school.
Be Seen
Drivers may not always be able to see students clearly. Wear bright-colored clothing whenever possible. When it is dark or difficult to see, carry a flashlight or wear reflective gear.
Look for Traffic
Watch for cars and trucks at every driveway and intersection. Pay attention to drivers in parked cars because they may be preparing to move.
Cross the Street Safely
- Stop at the curb or edge of the street.
- Look left, right, left, behind you, and in front of you for traffic.
- Wait until no traffic is coming before crossing.
- Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.
- Walk, do not run, across the street.
Follow Traffic Rules
Obey traffic signs, signals, and directions from adult school crossing guards.
