I am absolutely honored and delighted to be a part of the West community this year!  As the principal of West Middle School, I welcome the opportunity to partner with you to create a learning environment that is engaging, challenging, supportive and meets the needs of our diverse learners.

This 2017-18 school year is my twentieth year as an educator; and over the course of my career, I have been very fortunate to have had a variety of professional opportunities that have prepared me for this amazing leadership opportunity.  Although I have spent much of my educational career teaching English and Reading at the high school level, I also spent four years at the middle school level as a Language Arts teacher, Reading Interventionist, and Literacy Coach.  Most recently, I served as an assistant principal at Battle High School for the last three years.  To prepare for these roles, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree at Lindenwood University, Master of Arts degree at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Educational Specialist and Doctorate degrees at Ball State University.

I hope you are as eager for this year to begin as I am!  I look forward to continuing the legacy of excellence that has been established at West Middle School and partnering with our parents, students and community stakeholders to support our efforts to make West the Best! I am committed to ensuring that every West Middle School student receives the very best education possible, and that all students and their families feel valued and supported.

Please know that I welcome feedback and that my door is always open!  Feel free to stop in, call, or email with any concerns, suggestions, or ideas to help make this year the best year yet!

 Sincerely,

 Dr. Melita Walker

I am excited to come on board at West Middle School for second semester. With the great student body and staff at West, I look forward to continuing my work in education with this talented group of individuals. Here for every student and all individual needs, I look forward to partnering with families in order to support their student’s success at the middle level.

This is my 30th year in the field of middle level education and I have a vast number of experiences which bring me to this point in my career. I began my career in Southern Boone County R-1 Schools as a 6th grade teacher in 1988, then transitioned to become a teacher leader and mentored new teachers through the fellows program at the University of Missouri. Working on my leadership degrees, I received my masters, specialist, and doctoral degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia, which helped provide me the opportunity to join Columbia Public Schools in various administrative roles. I filled the roles of assistant principal and ultimately the principal role at Oakland Jr. High School, principal at Smithton Middle School, and ended my last three years in the Belton School District, in Belton, Missouri, as middle school principal. After retiring in 2017, I moved back to the central Missouri area.

I am thrilled be involved once again in the Columbia Public School System and look forward to working with Dr. Walker and her great team at West Middle. There is nothing quite as meaningful or fulfilling as working with the young minds of tomorrow and impacting their success stories! It is always a great day to be part of Columbia Public Schools and I am thrilled to be back!
