Russell serves students from prekindergarten through fifth grade. Russell students have many opportunities both in and out of school to learn, grow and serve our school and community. We are partners in education with Gerbes, The Callaway Bank, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Creative Days Art Studio. Our students can participate in the outdoor classroom, Russell University, Fitness night, school choir, Junior Achievement, Safety Patrol, Active Kids Club, sports, Technology Club, Running Club, Russell Robotics and Math Attack. We offer before and after school care through the University of Missouri’s Adventure Club.
We support teacher education by hosting student teachers from the University of Missouri and Columbia College.
In 1955 the Columbia Public School Board saw the need for two more elementary schools, Russell would be one of the schools, and another junior high school. Later that same year the district purchased forty acres and retained 15 acres for the school. In keeping with the policy of the time the school was named, Russell Blvd Elementary School. The school first opened for the 1958-59 school year. Dean Fitzgerald was the first principal of the school and the mascot was the Russell Rockets.
Today Russell serves over 500 students. Our current principal, Dr. Jill Brown, began her tenure in the 2014-15 school year.
