Welcome to the Counseling Department of David H. Hickman High School!
The Comprehensive School Counseling Program is an integral part of the curriculum and life at Hickman. Our program has several components: Classroom Lessons, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, and System Support. Our program is developmental in nature and is designed to support the students of Hickman to meet them where they are cognitively and emotionally.
Implemented by certified school counselors, our program builds on lessons learned in elementary and middle schools. Student needs in the areas of educational and career development as well as social and emotional learning are central to the work of our program.
In addition to the school counselors, our department has mental health specialists who work with the school counselors to provide education for our entire school, small groups, and individual students along topics such as stress reduction, drug and alcohol abuse/prevention, depression, and others. These specialists, along with the school counselors, are resources for families needing additional support.
Finally, the Counseling Department, as part of the Student Services Team, is dedicated to a holistic approach to student success at Hickman. We work in tandem with the Deans of Students, Administration, and the Health Office to support students and families.
We look forward to working with you!
Susan Evans Matthews, M.Ed.
