Mr. Joe Barnett

This is my 2nd year teaching at West Middle and Columbia Public Schools. I teach 6th grade science and am looking forward to this new year! See below for an introduction to our class mascot, Donatello, a yellow-bellied slider named after the famous ninja turtle (the science one!).

You'll find I'm a science nerd! I taught science at Mexico High School for 5 years prior to this and have also taught other sciences at the Columbia Area Career Center and Columbia College. Prior to getting my teaching certification, I spent time doing field work in wildlife biology during my graduate studies and for the Missouri Department of Conservation. I have also enjoyed working in genetics labs in the Texas Medical Center.

My wife, two young daughters and I love living (and biking, hiking and exploring) in Columbia and have been here 9 years now. This year, I'm excited to serve as part of the city's Climate and Environment Commission.

I am a Houston, TX native and completed undergrad at UW-Madison and consequently am an avid fan of Houston sports, Badger sports and all things Tex-Mex! When you are looking to distract me, bring up tacos, BBQ, nerdy scifi things or evolutionary biology!
