Welcome to Kristin Adams-Vargas's page! About Me!
Hi, my name is Kristin Adams-Vargas and this is my 25th year teaching special education, after obtaining degrees at:
Bachelor's of Science in Special Education from Williams Woods University
Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education 1-8 (emphasis in mathematics) from William Woods University
University of Missouri, Columbia Masters in Special Education with an emphasis in Attention Deficit Disorders with and without Hyperactivity as well as Autism
University of Southern Utah where I earned my Specialist in Special Education and Administration.
My teaching experience has been vast from teaching kindergarten self-contained special education cross categorical to high school essentials and class within a class setting. Then I have worked in special education administration for federal programs including Parents as Teachers, First Steps, as well as managing all Special Education paperwork and processing for one of the Lake area districts. My favorite job in my early years was watching those kindergarteners come into school with smiles and ready to learn everyday. I enjoy teaching reading, writing and mathematics the most, which planning out recess duty and activities. My favorite part of middle school special education was working with students and families to develop transition plans for their future and plan their high school courses, while setting realistic work expectations. Then in high school, I have enjoyed several experiences from working with our academic lab to support students in finding appropriate working space, setting up study times, and learning to schedule their time for studying to improve grades while maintaining work and activities outside of their school day.
During my "free time" I enjoy spending time by the water mostly. I find the water very relaxing be it a pool where I can sit and sun and watch the children play while I read a book, or be boating or traveling the seas into Mexico and the Caribbean. I enjoy my time with my family where we cook, shop, walk, and attend a variety of family baseball, softball, football, and tee ball games, as well as travel together. I am married and we have two adorable show puppies, Louie and Coco, both Shih Tzus that are spoiled beyond belief. They are my children! I also enjoy gardening, mowing the lawn, and canning my produce for winter. Then in the winter I enjoy snuggling up with one of my handmade quilts and reading a good series such as Maya Banks, Silvia Day, Meghan March or one my students might be reading such as Walter Dean Meyers, or Sarah Dressen.
The greatest accomplishment I have as a special education teacher is that of watching my students graduate and begin a productive life in our community contributing in some shape or form. I have been privileged to have worked with many families, and Boone county which is a wealth of resources for our children. I have seen children come from living in their cars or hotels to working and earning wages surpassing what they dreamt. I have seen some of my students enlist in our military and return knowing more about life, and the true value of their education and bring that knowledge back into the classroom to share their experiences with others. I feel very fortunate to have experienced such great students and families! I know this year will be no different as you want what is best for you child as do I so together we are going to form the most amazing team and accomplish the goals your child has while attending BHS! We will make this year count, and I am glad you are here!
