Sewing for Literacy

When Books N Bags co-leaders Beverly Borduin and Nancy Adrian approached Rock Bridge High School Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, Lisa Kurzejeski, about creating bags for the books, she immediately said yes and put her Sewing 1 and Sewing 2 students to work.

A few short weeks later, Books N Bags had 50 handmade bags for kindergartners.

Books N Bags is an early literacy program that fosters the love of reading through book ownership and encourages reading at home by providing kindergartners with new and gently used books for their home libraries. Each child also chooses a one-of-a-kind handmade book bag to carry the books home.
